Milton Keynes

What did you do before you worked for SOFEA?

I was primary school teacher for 12 years, teaching Year 6. Before that I was a graphic designer for 15 years.

Why did you decide to work for SOFEA?

I was frustrated with the way mainstream education was heading, where pupils were seen as dollops of data on a spreadsheet rather than individuals. I was tired of the one size-fits-all approach that schools are increasingly forced to take, which marginalises those students with more complex needs and backgrounds. At SOFEA the ethos is the complete opposite, we work with our learners as individuals and adapt the learning to them.

What is the best thing about your job?

Working with a diverse, challenging and genuinely funny group of young people – watching them develop and grow.

What have you learnt since being Employed by SOFEA?

I have learnt an entire new language made up of things like: “Man said…” “Bear long” “Leng” “Not gonna lie” (translations available on request).

In one sentence, say something about SOFEA.

It is good to be different.

Tell us something about you that not many people would know?

I got invited to speak at Harvard University, which might be the first thing I have ever done that made my mum proud.
