SOFEA’s Trustee Board is delighted to announce the appointment of Joanna Dyson OBE as our new Chair from 1 March 2024.

Following a national search campaign last year, working closely with Peridot Partners, SOFEA chose Jo to succeed inaugural Chair Bernard Grenville-Jones as he completes his full term of 9 years.

Jo is an experienced Food Sector Leader, Charity Chair, Consultant and Mentor, with direct experience of our work, and a deep commitment to our cause. With a successful leadership career in the corporate world, and a track record of delivering growth, Jo has exactly the right knowledge, skills and attributes to guide SOFEA through the next phase of our development.

Jo said “I am delighted to be invited to take up the role of Chair of SOFEA and I look forward to joining fellow Trustees as we work alongside CEO Richard Kennell and the talented and dedicated teams at Didcot and Milton Keynes to continue the great work that is going on at both sites in this impressive and inspiring organisation.

“Having been a volunteer at Didcot I have seen first-hand the transformative impact SOFEA has, creating a supportive environment with strong values, which enables young people to grow in confidence and unlock their talents, and at the same time, supporting local communities, feeding families and rescuing surplus food.

“It is a huge privilege to take over from Bernard Grenville-Jones and to have the opportunity to build on his outstanding legacy of strong governance and leadership over the last 9 years. I look forward to working with him and the team to ensure a smooth transition and continued growth for the organisation. I’d like to thank him for his support and wish him every success as he and his family embark on exciting new ventures.”

SOFEA Vice-Chair Ben Threadgold said “We are absolutely delighted that Jo has accepted the position of Chair of SOFEA. Our recruitment campaign attracted a very high calibre of applicants reflecting SOFEA’s growing standing and influence, and Jo’s passion, experience and commitment really shone through as the right person to take the baton from Bernard and lead us into an exciting new phase of SOFEA’s development.

“Jo joins a well-established and highly-skilled Trustee Board who, together with the fantastic Executive team, staff and volunteers, will continue to lead the delivery of SOFEA’s strategy over the coming years. For a decade we’ve fought for people that society has given up on; as SOFEA celebrates its 10th anniversary the need for what we do has unfortunately never been greater.

“With Jo as our new Chair we now move into a new era, working with our partners at FareShare to continue using the convening power of food to ensure that no one is left behind and to support our communities to be more cohesive. Our education, employability and wellbeing programmes will support many more people to achieve their full potential, especially as we look to expand our existing offering in Milton Keynes and add new projects and locations to our work.”

Please contact SOFEA to find out more; we are always very happy to welcome you to one of our sites in Didcot and Milton Keynes, or many Community Larders across the Thames Valley and South Midlands, to meet our communities and to see our work first-hand.
